Too short. Simply too short. Two tracks and a mere eight minutes. Exact and on the spot in terms of the length at least, but too short nonetheless. Also, the price is nearly a Euro a minute, which adds up to seven in total. To sum it all up, rather pricy and sadly only a glimpse.
Harsh ... right? Maybe a bit.
Well, it is necessary to set certain things straight right from the start. Why should one be mealy-mouthed about it? What good would come of doing so?
... what about the music, then?
The grand dynamic stillness of the cover artwork is what can be found in those two lonely pieces of music on this release. The second expands on the first, adds further elements and sounds, while remaining true to the intentions laid out earlier.
It all opens with a simple but utterly captivating motif by the piano. Minimalist in style, only comprised of a few notes, varied extensively, amply supported by other instruments (or keyboards) so that it, all in all, merges into a well arranged audio representation of the cover artwork. Playful and grand at the same time. The endless clash of waves, the juxtaposition of breathtakingly beauty and breathtaking danger. Every alteration of the sound, every new spin of the motif is a new round in this wild churning, this maelstrom of water and froth. The piano spins, the rest pushes. Onward! Onward! Onward! Into this chaos, embracing the wildness, no look back, only forward. The end devastatingly open to interpretation. Only three minutes in length. Only a small glimpse and nothing more.
The second piece is longer, and it expands on the first one. Interestingly enough the opening and the alteration of the motif presented in the opening track attempts to lure the listener into a false direction. Like the cuckoo, who makes an appearance here, appears to be something else, while being in the end somehow familiar. Unmistakeably the play of the piano has its impact. Initially the motif appears in an expanded variation as a trill or tremolo, while it later progresses to its original conception. Though these earlier moments add a nice loftiness to the sound, which reduces the overall intensity of the music.
More would have been nice. The fleeting moments of cataclysmic entropy explored to a larger degree. Currently, there are only glimpses. One smaller, one larger, but only glimpses. Yet these are captivating and devastating at the same time.
